BEST PRESENTS TO TAKE HOME: wooden coasters/mats

by | Jun 22, 2015

It´s always been quite a challenge recommending presents to take home from Cuba. You buy your rum and cigars but you´re also looking for some other little thing; something lovely, evocative of the island. Havana might now be able to offer you designer jewellry, lamps and T-shirts, but it’s still these very functional-yet-artistic pieces that most take my fancy.

Artisan Carmen Canosa Duran (known to friends as Buby) cuts beautiful-smelling cedar into various sizes and then prints onto them a variety of Cuban art, film posters ormulataPanuelos

US flyers (from the 30´s/40´s). A hard varnish finishes off the job and there you have it: a small artwork, something quirky/funny that you can put your drink on, stick on the fridge, or even hang on the wall. Those with Kindles won’t use them butreaders still dedicated to hard or paperbacks will also enjoy her small, delicate book marks (below) and at only 2 cucs (just over a pound) a piece.collaresChe

Prices range from around 4-20 cucs depending on size. You can find Buby – a lovely woman and so always a pleasure – at the small, more intimate, craft market in Calle Obispo & Calle Aguacarte, Old Havana; Mon/Tues/Sun: 10am- 6pm.
