If, however, you would love to experience a real slice of Cuban life, you must definitely take a trip involving cuban public transport!
Even if it’s only for one trip, there’s nothing that will give you an exclusive, authentic insight into everyday life in the country like Cuban public transport! The systems here are like nothing you will ever have experienced before anywhere else in the world, and if you are going to attempt it, you will need a little bit of guidance! Here are the methods of Cuban public transport that you need to know about….
Classic Car Ride
As you may know, Cuba is famous for its abundance of classic cars – beautiful, old models from the 1960s and 70s that give a brilliant, retro style to the streets of the towns and cities. Hitching a ride in one of these is not only a convenient way to make a short trip, it will give you the chance to take lots of photos and feel as though you’re starring in an old fashioned movie!
Cuba is one of the only countries in the world where you can still catch a ride in a horse drawn carriage! This will probably take a little bit longer, so definitely not a method to use if you’re in a rush to get somewhere, but it’s a lovely way of taking in the atmosphere of the city at a slower pace; and perfect if you’re an animal lover!
These are relatively new methods of getting around the cities and towns of Cuba – small little taxis that look like pods, and will get you safely where you need to go. They can also be a little slow, so again they’re perfect if you have plenty of time to explore at your leisure.
A really traditional method of Cuban public transport, and also an experience for thrill seekers! These vans basically allow large groups of people (the limit appears to be only when there is danger of people literally falling out!) to squeeze into the carriage, so you really need to hold on!
