If you were lucky enough to be in Havana last week for the first-ever Irish Cultural Week
to be held in the capital, organised by the Irish Embassy in Mexico (which also serves Cuba) the event built on the excellent, inspiring and ongoing work of Una Corda – an Irish project supporting piano tuners in Havana. You could have heard traditional music and songs from reknowed pianist Micheál O Súilleabháin and singer Sean nos larla O´Lionaird. Una Corda delighted with Irish compositions played by Cuban piano students and there was more traditional music and dance from Comhaltas Ceolteorí Eireann. All films and documentaries were shown at either Cine Chaplin (Calle 23, e/10 y 12, Vedado) and the Cinemateca de Cuba (Calle 23, No. 1155, Vedado). There´s was no Guiness, nor Irish Whisky, but mojito´s and a programme like this, it was a fantastic week!
