Baseball Trips in Cuba
Baseball is Cuba’s national sport and one of the island’s most profound loves. There are specifically designated street corners where high-tempo baseball discussions unfold day and day – you’ll recognize them by the arm flailing and high passion in evidence.
Cuba has no professional league, but its so-called amateur players are considered some of the best in the world: as proven by the constant attempts by Major League Baseball agents from across the Florida Straits to aggressively scout and court them, sometimes risking the wrath of the US Department of Homeland Security and the strong arm of the law.
The regular baseball season in Cuba is from November through March, with playoffs and the final championship often extending the season into May. Most major towns and cities on the island and a local team, and some of the best are in Pinar del Río, Sancti Spíritus, Santiago de Cuba and Santa Clara. Not forgetting Havana’s Industriales team.
One can buy tickets at the box office for less than 5 Cuban pesos – the national currency – or our local guide will be able to secure tickets in advance. If you do get a chance to go to a baseball match, don’t pass it over: this is one of the quintessential Cuban experiences.
