When is the best time to go to Cuba?
If you’re planning a holiday to Cuba, you’re probably wondering when’s the best time to go. What follows is some key information about Cuba’s weather, accommodation availability and seasonal events, so you can decide on the best time to visit Cuba.
When is the best time to visit Cuba weather-wise?
Cuba has a subtropical climate, but temperatures do vary. The Atlantic North East side of Cuba has cooler temperatures than the Caribbean side. The dry season is from November to April, which many consider the best months to visit Cuba. The rainy season is from May to October. Having said that, even though Cuba is in the tropics, it does have a Northern Hemisphere weather pattern, which means it’s cooler in the winter than the summer.
If you come to Cuba between December and February, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get lying-on-the-beach-level temperatures (unless you don’t mind cooler beach days), and you might even need to bring a jumper and some long-sleeved shirts.
However, the average temperature throughout the year is between 20?C and 35?C – and the temperature of the sea is between 26?C and 31?C – so it never gets too cold.
Also, during the rainy season, it doesn’t rain all day, and the thunderstorms are spectacular. Given how warm it is during the rainy season, it’s not unheard of to go swimming in the sea during a storm!
The other thing to bear in mind is that Cuba’s hurricane season is between June 1st and November 30th. But this shouldn’t impact your holiday; hurricanes are infrequent and Cuba is very well prepared for them when they happen.
The best time to visit Cuba weather-wise is probably the last two weeks in March and the first two weeks of April. This is when you’re effectively guaranteed blue, sunny skies and low rain.
When is the best time to holiday in Cuba price-wise?
The only problem with going to Cuba in March is that it is high season, which means you’ll pay more for your flights and accommodation. High season is between November and March, and between July and August. Prices can be up to 30% higher during high season, with less discounts and deals available.
During low season, which is April, May, June, September and October, prices are lower and numerous special deals are available which you should look out for.
When is the best accommodation available?
You’ll find that popular locations in Cuba such as Trinidad and Old Havana are booked up well in advance in high season and at peak periods (which stretch from Christmas to the end of March). So if you are planning to go to Cuba during high season, it is best to make plans early.
During low season, availability is better, but some hotels partially close down in order to renovate or refurbish, so it is worth checking in advance.
When are the best festivals on?
Cuba is renowned for its culture, its entertainment and its pizzazz. December has the wonderful Havana Jazz Festival and Film Festival and the San Lazaro Procession, while July and August have the Santiago and Havana carnivals respectively. The world-famous Havana Ballet Festival is in November, and the Cine Pobre Film Festival takes place in April. May has both the annual Cubadisco musical awards show and the Hemingway Fishing Tournament. All are top-notch events.
