Find out how communication in Cuba works through phones and the internet and how it will impact your holiday.

People often seem to have an idea that communication in Cuba is somewhere between extremely difficult and completely impossible. Many people often travel to Cuba with the assumption that they won’t be able to communicate with anyone outside of the country, through phones or through the internet for the duration of their stay. In fact, for a lot of people, that might quite an appealing thought!

Here at Esencia Experiences, this issue is something we are asked about a lot. In the modern world, where everyone is in constant communication and any information you need is simply a few clicks away, the idea of travelling to a country where the internet and mass communication is a recent revelation can be difficult to get on board with.

We truly believe that a big part of the magic of a holiday in Cuba is the fact that it allows you to switch off and disconnect from reality – you can get back to the old fashioned art of talking to people face to face, and you won’t be distracted from the beauty all around you. However, if you don’t think you’ll be able to spend your whole holiday without some kind of telecommunications, or you’ll need it for business during your trip, here’s everything you need to know about communication in Cuba

Communication by phone is easier than ever before

In recent years, perhaps in anticipation of an increase in American tourism, communication by phone has dramatically improved. Now, whenever you are travelling from, it is likely that your phone network provider will be able to work in Cuba. So while calls and text messages may not be as clear and quick as you’re used to, they can still happen. Most hotels will also have a landline that you can use to make calls if you’d prefer a more reliable, secure method for important phone calls.

Communication by internet is difficult, but by no means impossible

Internet access is incredibly limited in Cuba, although there are signs that it is improving. Hopefully within a few years, accessing the internet in Cuba will be as easily as in any other country! If you do need to access the internet urgently, some hotels will have a connection you can use – although you should be aware that it will come at a cost.
